Pilotage has always been a demanding job. We provide a portable assistant that the pilot can carry onboard and be able to carry out pilotage in virtually any conditions.
There are essentially 2 competing technologies:
Portable Pilot Unit using independent sensors
This system comprises of a compact portable unit which the pilot carries on board and places conveniently in any part of the ship with open sky view. This unit is fully waterproof and houses a long life battery. 2 GPS antenna with magnetic mount connect to this unit to provide accurate heading, position, ROT. The pilot then uses a laptop which is loaded with special display software and an accurate chart of the port to navigate the ship safely. Customers in India who are benefiting with this technology are:
- Shell Hazira Port;
- Adani Port
Portable Pilot Unit using AIS pilot plug
Every SOLAS compliant ship carries an AIS onboard and every type approved AIS has a pilot plug on it. The AIS onboard is connected to the ship’s GPS, gyro and Log. Thus the AIS is an excellent single point source for all the data required for pilotage. The pilot connects a wireless transmitter with matching pilot plug to this AIS’s pilot plug and connects wirelessly his laptop to the AIS for receiving all the data required. The laptop runs the a special pilotage software and has an accurate chart of the area.
